DIY Headset Press

Post by marty_hd on Tue Feb 12, 2008 2:27 pm

Costs about 6USD. I couldn't wait for a headset press to be shipped from the USA and didn't want to shell out big Euros for a one-time job.

I took my headset to the hardware store, found washers that fit into the headset (about the same size as ther steerer tube), washers that were larger than the headset and buncha nuts. The rubber rings came from flip-top beer bottles.

In the image, the assembly on the right goes into the lower headset cup and is fixed. The smaller washers sit inside the lower cup and ensure that it stays square to the large washer.

The assembly on the left (of the above image) is the part that is tightened and will slide down the threaded rod. The rubber beerbottle seals ensure that the washer are held in place by friction so that they do not fall down into the headtube. The top nut is tightened. Works like a charm.

The large washers sit in the lip of the headset and not the bearings. Beats the snot out of banging the headset in with 2x4s and a mallet.

I've even used a 2x4 and a mallet. But this is not recommended Smile
