The Grand Daddy of them all!
For those interested in participating in the best MTB event that the states has to offer!
The Chequamegon 40
On Saturday of the event weekend, this 40 mile, mass start, point-to-point off-road bicycle event travels from downtown Hayward, WI, over the famed American Birkebeiner Ski Trail, forest roads, snowmobile trails and other wooded lanes to the finish line in Cable, WI. 1,700 participants will take part in this challenging fat tire marathon.
Hurry and check out the website as the registration process will be starting soon! I would reccomend sending Gary Crandall an email as he is truely a supporter of the US Military. He was able to waive the registration process for me as he has discretionary slots for set aside for special people:)

Hope to see you there!

Re: The Grand Daddy of them all!
Sept, huh? There's a god chance that I might be there and I'll work on Merle and Jason (at Hill from Aviano) to get them to tag along. Just wish it was longer than 40 miles.
Re: The Grand Daddy of them all!
Dude 40 miles is long enough with that course. It's an all out sprint from Start to Finish! The dudes that place in the top don't get out of their big gear. I have know idea what gearing LaLonde was pushing but it was crazy! He won it the year I did it with a 29er SS. Here's the interview with him.

Re: The Grand Daddy of them all!
It was a two or three day thing with other races as well right? Didn't you do a short track race or something when you were there. I've got it on my calendar for next year. Just have to clear the leave once I get to CO. Where are you staying?
Re: The Grand Daddy of them all!
I don't know yet. I told Gary Crandall that I would contact him when I get to the states. It's a lottery event so there are limited spots. If I were you... I'd send him an email and see if he can give you a discretionary slot. Tell him you are in the Air Force and just spent a year in a *** DOO DOO *** hole and I'm sure you'll get in:) The application should be online around the 10th of Feb. It's a pretty cool event ! Friday is a pre race party and a chance to talk with the pros. Saturday is the big race with a awards party following. Sunday is the Fun day with numerous activities such as the MTB crit, Navigational contest (Map & Compass), Huffy throwing contest and Log pull just to name a few. It's a blast!
Oh there are many trails there with tons of single track if your looking to make it a longer vacation.
